When the screenplays of unsuccessful writer Joel Brandt (Matthew Lillard) about mysterious killers start to come to life, he is the prime suspect in the murder spree. Though he knows he is being framed, he avoids working with the police. Both victims and killer seem to call him and leave messages about the various killings. Joel usually deletes these, thinking them crank calls. Det. Lavery (Deborah Kara Unger) does not think so, but the wrong man must clear himself as the quagmire of mystery and mayhem raise the death toll. Claire (Chiara Zanni) and Adam Brickles (Michael Eklund), some of the small coterie around Brandt, may be the killer, according to the screenwriter.
