We learn a lot of boxing history along the way, but the real story here is Erik’s struggle to get out from under the shadow of his father, who was a famous sports broadcaster and Erik’s own role as a parent to his son Teddy.

The accident occurs very fast and Dwight opts to escape. Now Dwight should have stopped, but he simply drove off. The police are called, and an investigation begins. Haunted by the tragedy, both fathers react in unexpected ways, as do Grace and Emma. So that, even as one family grieves over it's loss, the other is overburdened by guilt. Sad as they are, the fate forces the two fathers to make the hardest choices of their lives.

Police can connect the crimes, but they have trouble finding witnesses, or anyone to talk to, as the entire community seems to be silenced by fear and a distrust of police authority. A young constable, Graham McGahan (Brendan Cowell), suffers from tinnitus and applies for worker’s compensation. He lives right near the crime scene, and begins to cross paths with people who have been affected by the murders. He learns how the real-life ramifications of a crime on everyday people differ greatly from his experience as a policeman.

This film is autobiographical. It is based on the story of Richard Pimental (Ron Livingston), who had a serious hand in helping create the Americans With Disabilities Act. It starts off telling the tale of Richard as a young man with a talent for speaking in public. He has a mentor, who is named Dr. Padro (Hector Elizondo), but when Richard tries out for College Bowl, Padro tells him to live a full life because he has nothing important to say. After hearing this, Richard enlists in the military. He does this because he agrees. It is in the military where Pimental goes is permanently disabled in Vietnam. He is discharged and pretty much told by everyone in the world that he will now never amount to anything because he is disabled. He decides to prove them wrong, and to prove them wrong about ALL disabled people. And to help disabled people see that they can make something of themselves. He makes friends with Art Honeyman (Michael Sheen), who swears a lot and has cerebral palsy, Christine (Melissa George) who becomes his girlfriend, and Mike (Yul Vasquez), who is an alcoholic. With their help, he starts to make things a lot better for the disabled.
