Denver Times sports writer Erik Kernan (Josh Hartnett) rescues a homeless man named Champ from a vicious beating at the hands of a group of college students. What Erik doesn’t know at the time is at that Champ really is boxing legend Bob Satterfield. (Samuel L. Jackson.) We also find out is that Bob is not the only one in this story in need of saving. Erik is in jeopardy of losing his job due to his less than stellar stories and his marriage to a fellow journalist (Kathryn Morris) has gone south. When Erik finds Champ, he’s found the story of a lifetime, the kind of story every journalist dreams of and one that gets him nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. In this way Champ saves Erik. We learn a lot of boxing history along the way, but the real story here is Erik’s struggle to get out from under the shadow of his father, who was a famous sports broadcaster and Erik’s own role as a parent to his son Teddy.
