Dave Stutler (Jay Baruchel) learns one day that he is the inheritor of ancient powers going back to the time of Merlin. He is tasked with an enormous responsibility: to help sorcerer Balthazar Blake (Nicolas Cage) win his battle against arch-rival Maxim Horvath (Alfred Molina). Balthazar gives Dave a crash-course of sorts into the uses of his new-found power, and then the two must set out to stop Horvath. Dave however is distracted by his attraction to his classmate Becky (Teresa Palmer), who he has been interested in for over 10 years. It's up to Dave to balance his new-found powers with his emotions.
