Hester Prynne (Demi Moore), a new arrival to the American colonies, finds herself alone after her husband goes missing during a raid on the settlement. Almost certain of Roger Chillingworth's (Robert Duvall) death, she falls in love with a young minister Arthur Dimmesdale (Gary Oldman), who returns her affections. When Hester's Quaker neighbors discover that she has fallen pregnant, she is publicly humiliated in an attempt to learn who the father of the child is. She refuses and is imprisioned, where she gives birth to her daughter Pearl. She is forced to wear a scarlet letter "A" and to be followed around by a drummer boy proclaiming her crime of adultry. Accusations of witchcraft, increasing tensions between the settlers and the Alqonquin tribe, and betrayal explode in a final, violent conclusion.
