Is everyone truly destined to spend their life with one person? Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) and Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) decide to test that theory. After meeting while Christmas shopping for their respective lovers, neither can deny the instant chemistry. After spending the night romancing one another, they separate with Sara's insistince that if they are meant to be together, Fate will bring them together. Years pass and each becomes engaged, but Jonathan still has a nagging feeling about Sara. Sara feels that same way and puts her relationship on hold and flies across the country to take a chance on a fleeting night of emotion. They both believe in soulmates, but will Fate prove them right?
