A girl in the mountains in the 1800s finds herself at odds with the community she lives in when she tries to change one of their traditions. After her sister dies in an accident, the girl seeks the Sin Eater (Peter Wingfield) to find redemption. He tries to help her, but the girl finds no relief. She soon finds a better solution when she encounters a preacher by the river (Henry Thomas). He teaches her about the redemptive power of belief in Jesus. She tries to spread word of God and the bible until the town's matriarch (Louise Fletcher) finally reveals the horrible secret the town has been hiding.
