Uncovering a lost Charles Dickens novel is the last thing an unfortunate woman does. But for a trio of unusual people who team up to try and solve the mystery of her death it is the beginning of a look back into the world of Charles Dickens. The team consists of a sportswriter named Mike (Vinnie Jones), and a police officer named Kate (Julie Cox), and a rather eccentric old man from the street (Derek Jacobi). The three attempt to solve the riddle that is in the newly discovered novel so that they can solve the mystery of the woman's death. Along the way they must contend with a publisher who wants the book, Roberta Elliot (Vanessa Redgrave), a detective, D. I. Willis (P. H. Moriarty), and the owner of a construction company, Don Roberts (Jason Flemyng), all of whom attempt to foil their efforts.
