Zhao Zilong (Andy Lau) is a common man in an ancient Chinese kingdom whose country is being torn apart by civil war. He rises from his humble roots to heed the call of his duty to fight for his country. With his courage and his cunning, he ends up in command of an army whose mission is to free the land from an evil warlord. He dreams of unifying his nation, and his heroism becomes legendary, but years pass by and his country is still at war. The throne has since changed hands, and the new king comes to the conclusion that peace can only be reached once the warlords are defeated. Zhao, now much older than when he took up his sword, embarks on his final campaign to bring peace back to his country and crown his rise to glory.
