Pursley Hominy Will (Scarlett Johansson) goes to New Orleans to attend her mother's funeral and decides to stay there and live in the house she grew up in. She finds two of her mother's friends, Bobby Long (John Travalta), once a literature professor and Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht), who is struggling to write a book about Bobby's life, living in the house. Pursley decides to let them stay and moves in with them. At first their relationship is difficult, but after revealing and learning much about one another's lives, as well as their own, the lives of all are improved.
