Tommy Vinson (Burt Reynolds) is an ex-poker player who has won a great deal of money in his life, but has decided that the life is to stressful so he retires. One day he meets up with a young hot shot card player named Alex Stillman (Bret Harrison) who pleads with Vinson to teach him his craft. Tommy reluctantly mentors the youngster and improves his card playing ability significantly. When Alex completes his training, Vinson has regained the itch to begin playing again and they both enter the World Series of Poker. Both men do very well and make it to the final table where they have to go head to head for an astounding amount of money.
