Sandy Edwards (Toni Collette) serves as unwilling guide to visiting Japanese businessman Tachibana Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima) around the deserts of Western Australia. They behave awkwardly to each other initially, Sandy is annoyed by his perceived arrogance and haughtiness, and he is either shy towards her, or uncomfortable because he is out of his element. After their vehicle is bogged in sand they are forced to spend the night out in the desert alone. In the morning their friendship blossoms as they free the vehicle and begin to enjoy each other and the natural beauty of their surroundings. Despite being two people from different worlds they find themselves attracted to each other. However tragedy strikes after an incident at a waterhole and Sandy is left broken and confused by their brief affair.
