Two young couples on a road trip one rainy night stop at a bizarre gas station featuring Captain Spaulding's Museum of Monsters and Madmen, and his carnival-like Murder Ride sideshow. The gas station owner and attraction narrator is a rotten-toothed clown named "Captain Spaulding" (Sid Haig), who tells them about a murderous local legend known as Dr. Satan, and reluctantly gives them directions to find the place of the muderer's execution. Back on the road, the travelers pick up a hitchhiker stranded in the rain, Baby Firefly (Sheri Moon Zombie). After one of their tires is suddenly blown out, Bill (Rainn Wilson) runs with Baby to her house, where he is tantalized by both the seductive Baby and her mother (Karen Black). Bill's friends are soon towed to the house by Baby's quiet but imposing brother Rufus, and meet the rest of the unusual family members, including Baby's twisted brother Otis (Bill Mosley). A warm place to come in from the rain quickly turns into a deadly trap and the travelers find themselves at the mercy of a family of sadistic psychopaths. Their only chance to escape may be through the secret underworld of Dr. Satan and his victims.
