The film commences in 1973, we are introduced to Ian Curtis (Sam Riley) who lives in England with his family. Ian is 17 years old when he meets Debbie Woodruff (Samantha Morton). The two discover their mutual love of poetry and music and Ian asks Debbie in marriage. She agrees and although they are still both teenagers, they get married and move in together. During a Sex Pistols concert in 1976, Ian and Debbie meet Bernard Sumner (James Anthony Pearson), Peter Hook (Joe Anderson) and Terry Mason who are criticizing their lead singer, Ian asks them if he could be recruited to be their band's vocalist. The band named Joy Division records a demo and sign a contract with Tony Wislon who first gave a bad review of their music. As the band starts to tour, Ian begins to have epileptic seizures and the medications he has to take leave him depressed. Ian then has an affair with a journalist that Debbie later finds out and she confronts him about this. However, during a concert Ian has another epileptic fit from which he's not recovering well and his absence provokes a riot on stage. Things promptly get worse and worse for Ian, he begs Debbie to forgive him but she refuses. He then decides something that will change the music's world forever...
