Simple, country boy Willie Stark (Broderick Crawford) rises from his humble Louisiana roots to become governor of the state. He starts out with strong ideals and a proper moral compass, but along the way to fame he becomes extremely corrupt and manipulative. He even hypocritically calls out the corruption of other politicians while completely failing to acknowledge his own. Willie becomes romantically linked to several powerful women through out the state, and becomes even more famous for his romantic exploits than for his policy. He is finally confronted with his past when he begins a campaign to become President, and his life comes crashing down before him.
