During the Chinese Civil War, Captain Gu Zidi (Hanyu Zhang) is obsessed with honor in fighting and will never retreat. To that end, he keeps his troops engaged in hopeless battle. A soldier, Jiao Dapeng (Fan Liao), insists he has head a retreat bugle, which Gu Zidi refuses to believe. He orders men to continue their mission, despite its suicidal impact. When he realizes he was wrong, all are dead, except him. He must live with the guilt that he is responsible. Worse yet, his forty-six dead men will not have honorable deaths because bureaucracy has lost the records of his troop’s battle. Years later he fights civilian bureaucracy for recognition, rather than give up honor.
