The Diving Bell And The Butterfly
Drama, Biography
USA / English
In the mid-1990s this movie tells the true story of Jean-Dominique Bauby (Mathiew Amalric). Bauby is the editor of Elle magazine in France, he suddenly suffers a stroke at the age of 45, leaving his entire body paralyzed except for his left eye. Using his left eye to communicate through blinks, Bauby tells the story of his life and what life is now like for him as an immobile man. Assisting Bauby to tell his story is a speech therapist (Marie-Josée Croze) who assists Bauby in communicating more than just 'yes' or 'no' answers through his blinks. An editor (Anne Consigny) helps Bauby write a novel about his interior thoughts through a grueling process whereby he has to blink most of the alphabet to write his work. Bauby also sees his relationship with the mother of his three children, Celine (Emmanuelle Seigner), change as she stays by his side through most of this difficult time.
