With a failing bicycle business and a wife and child, Graeme Obree (Jonny Lee Miller), comes up with the idea to break the one hour bicycle record. He is inspired by his friend Douglas Baxter (Brian Cox) he fashions a bike out of used parts laying around his shop including an old washing machine. He names his bike ‘Old Faithful’. He tries and fails to set his record yet attempts to try again. This time he has success. However, his title claim is short-lived as a rival breaks the record one week later. Not to be deterred, Obree tries again and again succeeds to claim the record. Throughout his experience, Obree remembers back to his childhood which is scared by bullying and a rough family. These events haunt him as an adult and he battles depression that will eventually lead to a failed suicide attempt.
