Inge (Elizabeth Reaser) arrives in America as a mail-order bride just after World War II. The only real English phrase she knows is: "I could eat a horse!" And yet, she must quickly learn to fit in with her new friends and family members. Promised as a wife to Olaf (Tim Guinee), Inge is denied marriage to him due to the fact that she is German. Neither the minister (John Heard), nor the town, is ready to accept a German into their community so soon after the war. When Olaf's best friend, Frandsen (Alan Cumming) faces foreclosure on his farm, Olaf steps forward to defend not only his friend, but his bride-to-be. Despite the town's objections, Inge and Olaf form a loving bond and set out to prove she is worthy of their acceptance.
