At the start of the 2005/6 Season in the Spanish football league, Real Madrid lose at home 3-0 to their arch rivals Barcelona. This leads to a swap deal on the transfer deadline day with Michael Owen moving to Newcastle United and Santiago Munez (Kuno Becker) moving in the opposite direction. Munez has a dream start and scores a winning goal on his debut after coming on as a substitute. His fortunes contrast starkly with the former team star Gavin Harris (Alessandro Nivola) who finds himself in the middle of a slump. Munez’s form does not hold however, as after discovering his estranged mother is now living in Spain with a new family, he proceeds to get sent off in his first start for Real and misses a plane to a European game in Norway. Matters do not improve when at a party organised by Harris he cheats on his wife and appears to be another footballer, who may not live up to his potential as a result of the fame thrust upon him…
