Bob Maconel (Christian Slater) is a quiet man, working in an office and feeling small and unappreciated. He has plans for the office, disastrous plans that involve a gun and several people that he dislikes. Before he can act on this plan, though, Bob ends up in the role of accidental hero when another co-worker starts shooting up the office. Bob uses the gun that he had planned to use to shoot up the office, to save all of the people that he hoped to kill, he also saves Vanessa's (Elisha Cuthbert) life. Bob even gets a promotion from his boss (William H Macy), but the object of his desire is Vanessa, and she asks him to do something unthinkable in the aftermath of this crazy day.
