Notes of a Scandal depicts the story of a new young grade-school teacher, Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett), who is befriended by an older Barbara (Judi Dench). When Sheba starts an affair with a younger student as a way of escape from her older husband (Bill Nighy), she is discovered by Barbara, who promises, as a friend, not to give away her secret if she breaks off the relationship. Eventually, however, Sheba falters, and finds her friendship with Barbara to be increasingly awkward and clausterphobic.
