Billy Flynn (Jon Voight) is a retired and washed up boxer who has taken to retiring in Florida to train horses. With hard work, he makes enough to support him and TJ (Ricky Schroeder), his son whom he raises without the mother. Realizing his current life is insufficient for his boy, Billy vows to make a comeback in the ring to provide more money for TJ. Putting aside the horse track gambling and drinking Billy trains hard, but Annie (Faye Dunaway), TJ's mother, shows up at this time demanding custody of the boy. The emotions of fighting in the ring and in the courtroom begin to take their toll on Billy, but TJ is steadfast in his love for his father despite all the troubles.
